New Release of Cuban Cigars

As part of a regular article featuring the very best in fine cigars I have been invited to review the latest cigars and " limited editions " recently released by Habanos, distributors for Cuban cigars Worldwide.

Prestigious, rare and collectable the "Edición Limitada " originally made its appearance five years ago in 2001 and is characterized by a specially aged Maduro wrapper and distinctive gold and black band embossed with the year of production.

The entire production of what has amounted to 21 different and unique cigars to date is very much an ongoing experiment conducted by agronomists from TabaCuba - the agricultural production division responsible for the cultivation of tobacco leaf in Cuba.

In a secret, secure warehouse in the Havana suburb of Cerro the wrapper leaf for each year's production undergoes an additional mini-fermentation for a period up to 25 days at higher than normal temperatures to achieve a unique dark and marbled texture. This process serves to impart approx. 10% more strength to the cigar as indicated by the " toasted " flavour and taste of the tobacco.

This year ( 2006 ) we are treated to a repeat of some of the most popular cigars from previous years using filler from the 2003 crop. Furthermore Habanos have also launched a Romeo Y Julieta "Short Churchill " N.B. A reprise of the excellent Cohiba Piramides in boxes of 10 cigars will not be released until the Autumn.

Montecristo Robusto, Cuba Limited Edition 2006 ( 4.78 inches / 124 mm x 50 ring gauge ) rrp £18.00

The original 2001 cigar was somewhat nondescript in comparison. However the new 2006 model really delivers. A delightful smoke that subtly combines the distinctive, traditional tangy / bitter taste of Montecristo with a richer more complex flavour.

Good combustion with just the right amount of strength make this cigar a real treat if you are a Montecristo fan. The perfect partner for a peaty, malt whiskey. Recommended.

OUT OF STOCK !

Partagas Serie D3, Cuba, Limited Edition 2006 ( 5.58 inches / 143 mm x 46 ring gauge ) RRP £14.50

If you like the unmistakeable, slightly sweet and earthy aroma of Partagas this is for you ! With a lighter wrapper than its predecessor this reasonably priced cigar offers superb value compared to other Corona Gordas on the market. Devotees of the ubiquitos Serie D4 and old style Lusitanias will not be disappointed. Likely to age well this time round. Good Value.

Romeo Y Julieta Short Churchill, Cuba ( 4.78 inches / 124 mm x 50 ring gauge ) rrp £12.50

Possibly inspired by the short-lived Flor de Cano Short Churchill this mild, fragrant and approachable cigar will prove to be a big hit with those who desire a Havana that isn't too strong on the palate. The first true "Robusto" size for the brand. Boxes of 25 are preferable to the 10's in terms of quality. Watch out for packs of three cigars in smart new alluminium tubes. Destined to be popular.
