March Issue

A New Year and one which is destined to provide even fewer opportunities to enjoy fine cigars in public. But despite future legislation designed to limit our enjoyment of cigars we are fortunate to have even more choice when the occasion arises.

Montecristo Petit Edmundo-Cuba (4.33 inches / 110mm x 52 ring gauge ) rrp £11.00

January marks the arrival of a new baby for Montecristo – the Petit Edmundo. Only an inch shorter than its big brother yet sporting an imposing 52 ring gauge this pocket robusto has been launched with half an eye on the fact that many devotees of this best selling Cuban brand will not have as much time to enjoy cigars once the forthcoming ban on smoking in public places becomes a reality. A short “big” smoke more akin in taste and effect to the classic No. 2 torpedo than its namesake, the newcomer is certainly a class act. I managed to consume over half its length before the beautifully ribbed ash finally fell into an ashtray. No combustion problems here and an impressive debut for such a small cigar. Recommended for fans of Montecristo.

Cohiba Siglo II in Tubes - Cuba ( 5.18 inches / 129mm x 42 ring gauge ). rrp £14.00

The New Year also heralds the introduction of a new range of Cohiba’s … the Cohiba Maduro. Scheduled to be released at the forthcoming 9th Festival del Habano in Havana at the end of February. Three short sizes will be offered as part of an entirely new range of cigars for Cuba’s most prestigious brand. Sporting distinctive, dark Maduro wrappers not dissimilar to those that adorn Edicion Limitada cigars the three cigars are a Genios or “Genie” ( 5.5. inches by 52 ring ); Màgicos or “Magic” (4.5 inches by 52 ring) and Secretos or “Secret” just 4 inches x 40 ring.

Their collective individuality is further enhanced by pigtails. For the moment however we will have to be content with a re-launch of the reliable and popular Cohiba Siglo 2 in the same classy “Cohiba” tubes that were previously only available with the majestic Siglo VI. A stylish innovation.
