With the news today that Britain has already enjoyed its warmest April for 350 years following hard on the heels of the hottest year ever recorded this Summer looks set to be a scorcher. Balmy days and barbeques. Garden parties and sultry summer evenings demand that we select cigars that suit warmer climes. Milder, more fragrant smokes that are easy on the senses prove preferable to the richer more complex cigars consumed indoors during cold winter months.
Cigar smoke seems to linger in the air when temperatures rise. It becomes more pungent and noticeable. The aroma of sweet smelling tobacco mingles easily with the scent of flora and fauna. This month I have selected three cigars of similar size from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua that would be most appropriate to smoke outdoors during the Summer months.
Davidoff “Robusto 100 Aniversario“ – Dominican Republic ( 5 inches / 129 mm x 50 ring gauge ) rrp £15.00
Created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Zino Davidoff the 'Robusto 100 Aniversario' was conceived as a limited release worldwide in boxes of just 8 cigars ! They say never judge a book by its cover for one has to wonder at its rather nondescript wrapper. But behind this façade lies a classic robusto full of latent potential. Its subtlety is quite deceptive. Yes, it forms a pretty ash and its combustion is nigh near faultless. But gradually one is lulled into a genuine sense of contentment as it develops a harmonious and perfectly balanced smoke. The blend of tobaccos is exemplary in such a young cigar. A sublime smoke that can only get better with age. Highly Recommended.
El Rey de Mundo “Choix Supreme” – Cuba ( 5.18 inches / mm x 48 ring gauge ) rrp £11.50
When I first started smoking Havana cigars I cut my teeth on the Choix Supreme by El Rey de Mundo ! Admittedly it was the only robusto I could afford. But despite its representing excellent value for money its innate appeal has never diminished for it remains in my book one of the most approachable of Cuban cigars.
With a mild and fragrant character it is appropriate to smoke virtually anywhere and anytime. A woody, slightly sweet and herbaceous aroma proved easy on the senses. A sort of “no brainer “ - not demanding or over-powering in any way. Some people are of the opinion that the blend has become stronger in recent years but for me the Hermosos No.4 remains a classic.
CAO - Cameroon L’Anniversaire Rothschild - Dominican Republic ( 4.5 inches x 50 ring gauge ) rrp £9.00
The Cameroon L’Anniversaire Rothschild by CAO has remained one of the most consistently highly rated cigars from Nicaragua. Only the finest grade one Cameroon wrappers, the rarest and most expensive of all wrapper leaf, are used to clothe this pocket Robusto. The binder and filler leaves are chosen from a select blend of five different classes of Cuban-seed tobacco grown in Nicaragua’s famed Jalapa Valley. Whereas most cigars use 2 or 3 filler leaves, L’ Anniversaire utilizes four filler leaves in its blend, resulting in an unmatched flavor consisting of sweet coffee and caramel, a combination of flavors to delight even the most discriminating connoisseur.
