Once again we review three quite different cigars with which to celebrate Christmas.
The Por Larranaga “Magnifico” - Cuba ( 6.75 inches / mm x 50 ring gauge ) rrp £19.00
For many aficionados this cigar is a real Christmas treat having been made exclusively
for the U.K.market and available in only 1400 numbered boxes. The “Magnifico” echoes
the once renowned “ Magnum” – a holy grail for cigar enthusiasts in the 60’s and 70’s.
As a Cuban brand Por Larranaga dates from 1834. Its signature gold band caught the attention
of Rudyard Kipling who, in his 1890 poem “The Betrothed” famously said “There’s peace in a Larranaga”. (This poem also contains the immortal line “And a woman is only a woman but a good cigar is a smoke”) ?
Despite its provenance this is a relatively mild cigar which has been well made and constructed.
I quite liked the size and fragrance but didn't care for the dry and rather bitter after-taste due to its comparative lack of age which should diminish with time.
Destined to be a hit with collectors and enthusiasts alike and a canny investment !
The 2007 Dunhill Signed Range Torpedo – Nicaragua ( 5.50 inches / mm x 52 ring gauge ) £13.50
Established in 1907 Dunhill now celebrates a century as purveyors of fine cigars and tobaccos with the re-launch of their notable “Signed Range”. Using the motto “Since 1907” and only top quality tobaccos from three different origins (Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Cameroon) each box is individually numbered and personally signed by the roller who made them.
The range consists of six popular sizes but the Torpedo impresses with its balanced form and dark, silky wrapper. Excellent combustion and pronounced Nicaraguan taste make this an enjoyable and approachable cigar although each of the cigars in the new range smoke differently.
Macanudo Sol / Reserva Anual 2006 - Dominican ( 5 inches x 52 ring gauge ) rrp £9.50
Only six hundred numbered boxes of the “Sol” have been produced by Macanudo so you will have to look hard to find this special petit piramides from the Dominican Republic.
I have to admit that I am not a big fan of this big selling US brand but couldn’t resist the opportunity of sampling this pocket torpedo. As a relatively mild cigar with an easy draw the “Sol” is perfect to offer the occasional smoker who demands neither strength nor complexity.
