“ C’est la Difference ”

As a specialist people frequently ask me “ What is your favourite cigar ? “. In all truth I have to say I do not have one because today cigar smokers are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a smoke. The variety and complexity of fine cigars available is astonishing and in this issue w e review three cigars from Cuba, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic which highlight what a pleasurable experience sampling different tobaccos can be.

The Montecristo Edmundo - Cuba ( 5.3 inches x 52 ring gauge ) rrp £14.30

Named after Edmundo Dantes, hero of Alexandre Dumas’s famous novel “The Count of Montecristo” and rolled in the H.Upmann factory in Havana, the Edmundo was first launched in the Spring of 2004 to universal acclaim. Think of an H.Upmann No.2 torpedo and the flavour and strength are not a great deal different. Not the usual bitter-sweet tangy aftertaste of Montecristo but a mild cigar with an immensely satisfying size, draw and balance.

The 2004 Reserva del Presidente – Nicaragua ( 6.25 inches / mm x 52 ring gauge ) rrp £11.00

Exclusively rolled by “Carmen” in the famous Carlos Torrano factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. These unbanded “criollo” torpedos with their deliciously dark, oily wrappers constitute a limited production of just 200 individually numbered cabinets produced in 2004. A superb ash and nigh near faultless combustion make for a truly impressive Nicaraguan cigar .

The“Barrel” ( Zino Davidoff Platinum Crown Series ) - Dominican Republic ( 6.25 inches x 62 ring gauge ) rrp £27.00

Strong and full of flavour this monster of a cigar is a giant in the taste department. Created by master blender Hanky Kellner and rolled at Davidoff’s Tabadom factory, there is nothing missing from this cigar. A Connecticut shade grown Ecuadorian wrapper envelops a mix of no less than four Peruvian and homegrown fillers that are aged over four years. An irresistibly smooth, medium bodied and aromatic cigar that is as good as it is imposing !
