“ Gran Robustos”

As tastes and fashions change with the passing of time so does the style and size of cigars. During the 1990’s the Robusto format held sway. Upwardly mobile young executives craved a short fat cigar that offered a big effect which didn’t take an age to smoke. But with the new Millennium came a demand for even “bigger and better” cigars. We entered a new era of the “Gran Robusto“. Previously we have reviewed such cigars as the Cohiba Sublimes, Trinidad Robusto Extra and most recently the Por Larrañaga “Magnífico” which all fall within this new category of “super-robusto”. But this month we pause to look at the cigars which cemented the popularity of this format in addition to yet another new release.

The Cohiba Siglo VI - Cuba ( 5.78 inches x 52 ring gauge ) rrp £23.00

Arguably the best cigar to have come out of Cuba since the Millennium the Cohiba Siglo V1 has a totally unique size or vitola known as the “Canonaza” or canon reserved solely for this prince of Cohibas. Since it was launched in the summer of 2003 it has become “the” cigar with which to celebrate life by virtue of its awesome appeal. It is positively “moor-ish”. Stronger than a regular Siglo series with an almost peppery overtone. The flavour and strength of the cigar aligned to its superb combustion and size impart a sense of luxury. One is savouring Cuban tobacco at its very best with all the subtle nuance of taste and aroma for which Havanas are famous. By general consenus worth every penny of the £23.00 one pays for the privilege !

Partagas Serie D2 Limited Edition 2003 – Cuba ( 6.58 inches / mm x 48 ring gauge ) rrp £21.50

Also released in the same year this Edicion Limitada maduro provides a stark contrast to its running mate. Now five years aged this dark, rich and complex cigar is beginning to develop into a classic for those who love Partagas. I have a hunch that this cigar will go on aging and evolving for another ten or fifteen years ! One senses that it is still too young to fully appreciate. The potential is clearly there for this cigar to become one of the greats. Smoke the Siglo V1 now but save the D2’s for a rainy day !

Ramon Allones Gran Robusto ( Regional Speciality for Benelux 2007 ) - Cuba ( 6.10 inches x 50 ring gauge ) rrp £17.50

As a devoted fan of the Ramon Allones marque I have to admit that I was a trifle disappointed by this new cigar made exclusively for the Benelux market in 2007. I half expected an experience more akin to the worthy Belicosos – the original “Regional Speciality” made for the U.K in 2005. Or even a grand Specially Selected. But this offering is too meek and mild. The overall effect was not helped by indifferent construction which left me rather under whelmed. Apparently only 408 boxes and a handful of Cabinets have been produced which may be a blessing ?
