Dark Maduro cigars are nothing new in Cuba. Ever since 1999 TabaCuba has been conducting an experiment producing special wrappers to adorn all the annual Edition Limitadas. The wrapper is exposed to a second fermentation at higher than normal temperatures for 25 days to achieve the marbled look and "toasted" flavour associated with these cigars. But the new five year aged wrappers that adorn the new Maduro 5 Range are something else. Finally they seem to have found the perfect combination for these cigars have been particularly well made and smoke superbly..

The smallest cigar “Secretos” packs a real punch and is surprisingly full bodied. The “Magicos” follows the recent trend for small pocket sized robustos and is similar to the excellent Petit Edmundo in having an impressive 52 ring gauge. Whilst the “Genios” is full of complexity and typical Cohiba flavour and aroma. I was very impressed with its subtle, rich complexity. Slow burning and generating a distinctive white ash all three new cigars may need more time to develop their full potential but right now they are fabulous. The best Maduros so far. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Given the introduction of a Nationwide smoking ban only days beforehand many cigar afcionados and enthusiasts who attended the event pondered whether such outside events would be a more common occurence in the future given the restrictions imposed by the ban ?

IX Habanos Festival, La Habana 2007

Havana , 26 February, 2007 . – Habanos S.A., the world leader and number one Premium cigar, has presented today in the Habano Festival its star launch for 2007: Maduro 5, the new Cuban maduro (dark wrapper) cigar line from Cohiba. It also announced the launch of Reserva de Montecristo, homage to Montecristo No. 4 band, the best selling factory size in history, with over 1 billion cigars sold since its launch in 1935.

Cohiba Maduro 5, the new line to be added to the Cohiba brand, will complement the internationally renowned Clásica and 1492 (Siglos) lines, and it will be presented officially during the Welcome Night. This is traditionally the opening event of a week of activities designed for the enjoyment and delight of Habano lovers, and which has set a new record number of participants in its ninth edition this year.

Maduro 5 is heir to the best tradition of Cuban dark wrapper cigars (capa madura), which uses the upper leaves of the plant and obtains its characteristic range of dark colors and texture through a long, complex process of fully natural fermentation. This wrapper, enhanced by 5 years of aging, is used in the new Maduro 5 line, and grants unique characteristics to its three sizes.

The three Maduro 5 factory names are: Genios, (girth 52 x 140 mm); Mágicos, (girth 52 x 115 mm), and Secretos, (girth 40 x 100 mm.). All three sizes are in line with the latest market trends.

Maduro 5 has its own unique image within the brand. The traditional Cohiba ring band has been complemented with a lower black stripe with the marking Maduro 5. The wooden boxes are also darker in color than the Clásica and Los Siglos lines.

The second major launch of this year, Reserva de Montecristo, pays tribute to Montecristo No. 4, the flagship factory size of the brand, and to its smokers, and will be officially presented during the closing ceremony of the Festival. The wrapper, filler and binder leaves of Reserva de Montecristo have been aged for three years. These cigars are packaged in luxury black-lacquered cases, of 20 double-banded cigars: the brand’s and the reserve’s specific ring. This Special Release consists of 5,000 numbered cases and is reserved for true lovers of a good Habano.

New launchings in 2007

One of the launchings for this year is the Edmundo size in an aluminum tube with a new image added; the same image will be used for the Petit Tubos and Montecristo Tubos.

As regards to the new image of the tubes, the Churchills size of Romeo y Julieta, and the H. Upmann Coronas Major and Coronas Junior, present their new packaging with a completely new image, maintaining however the identity signs and traditional attributes of these brands.

The Limited Editions for 2007 are:
Escudos de Romeo y Julieta (girth 50 x 141 mm in the length); Regalos de Hoyo de Monterrey (girth 46 x 127 mm in the length); and Ingenios de Trinidad (girth 42 x 165 mm in the length).

In case you missed it in the papers, I am delighted to tell you that Cigars Unlimited as a ‘Specialists Tobacconists’ has got an exemption from the smoking ban is now law in England.

This means that, after 1 st July you will still be allowed to smoke in our shop for the purposes of sampling cigars and pipe tobaccos. It is important to note that the exemption does NOT apply to smoking cigarettes or hand rolling tobacco in our premises.

The 2006 Limited Editions Finally Have Arrived ! 

A repeat of three of the most popular sizes from previous years in SBN presentation boxes using filler from 2003 crop including the Montecristo Robusto and Partagas Serie D3 (Corona Gorda size 5 5/8" length and 46 ring gauge).

Unfortunately we will have to wait for much fancied Cohiba Piramides Limited Edition in boxes of 10 cigars which will not be made available until the Autumn.

However we will also receive stocks of the new Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills (Robusto size 4 7/8" length and 50 ring gauge) within a week. This new robusto will not be made available in tubes initially but come in standard dress boxes of 10 and 25 cigars.  

  As always we will offer all these new cigars as single cigars, sampler packs and full boxes for our clients worldwide.

The "Churchill" Humidor

In February 2004 in Havana, as part of the 6th Annual cigar festival, Jenny Repard, Sir Winston Churchill’s Great granddaughter, was presented with a special "Churchill" humidor to herald the opening of the new El Floridita restaurant and 1st Casa del Habano cigar store in London's Wardour Street.

Upon her return to London Jenny looked no further than CigarsUnlimited to assist her in preparing this superb humidor which contained 100 unique Churchill cigars. Whilst her husband enjoys the occasional cigar Jenny has decided to preserve the humidor for posterity and introduce an effective humidification system which will enable the cigars to develop their potential in the years to come..

Jenny came to collect the humidor with her daughter Arabella - Sir Winston’s great, great granddaughter - who approved of her mothers desire to lay the cigars down for posterity in order that they may further age and develop that distinctive Cuban character which would undoubtedly have met with the great man’s approval.
