Stanwell Pipes

Stanwell was founded in 1942 by Poul Stanwell Nielsen whose passion for pipes started what has today become one of the world's leading manufacturers of uniquely designed fine quality briars available at any price.
Stanwell pipes are world renowned for their outstanding smoking qualities, fit and finish, classic and progressive design, huge selection of shapes and finishes and extraordinary value. These handsome briars are carved from the finest , most carefully selected "extra-extra" grade briar roots from Corsica and Greece.
But the story about Stanwell is not complete without mentioning the famous Danish pipe carver Sixten Ivarsson who changed pipe design radically during his more than 30 years as pipe designer at Stanwell.
Today the equally famous Tom Eltang is chief designer but the extensive product line has pipes designed by literally all of the Great Danes like S. Bang, Chonowitsch, Ilsted, Anne Julie and many more. Many of Stanwell's shapes are now classics which are treasured worldwide by makers and collectors.

While I'm quite a fan of the HCA series for the merits of their function, there is certainly nothing one could desire more from their form, either. This is well-proven here by this graceful execution of a Dublin-hinting-at-Calabash. The bright nickel army mount adds both finish and a striking element of contrast, and with the longer of the two provided stems attached, the overall impression becomes almost akin to Arabesque scroll-work. You get 1 bowl, a regular pipe stem and a churchwarden pipe stem.

Drawing on the sort of design talent that Stanwell has long since made its trademark, it is very easy to find oneself claiming about a dozen or so shapes as one's "favorites". That having been said, the "139" is one of mine. It's hard to get more Danish than a Bent Billiard like this, with nary a straight line to be found, and a bowl and transition which combine to create something reminiscent of a tulip at the moment just before it's ready to fully flower. Well, a tulip someone bent roughly 90 degrees, and which has smoke trailing from the pistil, but you get my point.
