The UK has a tradition of producing fine chewing tobacco. The name Twist originates from sailors who made the tobacco into balls, and soaked it in molasses for a sweeter taste.
The Twist tobacco was then chewed not smoked, as the sailors worked on wooden boats and smoking would have been a fire hazard. Chewing tobacco was also suited to miners due to the obvious fire risks involved in working down the mines. Twist is made from dark-fired leaf and spun to give a rope effect.
Twist chewing tobacco is available in a variety of flavours; from strong black pigtail, to sweeter flavours such as apple, cherry, liqourice and aniseed. It is sold either as a twist section that you cut down to managable sizes, or in individual tobacco pellets.
Oliver Twist are smokeless tobacco pellets designed to be placed in the side of the mouth where it provides a satisfying flavour and gradually releases nicotine for up to an hour. A tobacco pellet measures 1.0 × 0.5 cm and has a natural content of nicotine.
