JF Germains stands as one of the premier small-scale blenders, operating from the picturesque Channel Islands off the coast of the UK. With roots tracing back to 1820, this family-run business has remained steadfast in producing classic “British” style tobaccos on the charming island of Jersey. Despite the passage of centuries, the Germain factory has stayed true to its traditional methods, resisting the urge to modernise or expand.
A true classic with an almost cult like following the Special Flake is a classic blend of carefully selected Virginia, spicy Oriental and a good helping of Latakia.
The main profile is smoky, sweet woodiness with a good amount of spice and some sour. This tobacco deserves the respect and praise it gets, being well balanced, unique and delightful to smoke.
It doesn’t billow smokiness to the point of choking out the other flavours, like some Latakia flakes out there. Theres a delicacy to the blending that shows time and care has been taken to develop what is one of the best of its genre.
